When I was a kid (I’d say roughly 13/14, maybe?) a good friend of mine showed me a movie called Interstellar. This movie was immediately, and has been since, on my top ten list.
One of the main things the movie touched on is parallel universes. The theory that, because the universe is infinitely growing and expanding, there are infinite versions of our universe out there, just with slight differences. (This can sometimes be tied into The Butterfly Effect)
To paraphrase, the Parallel Universe theory suggests that for every decision you make in this universe, there is a parallel universe were you chose something different.
I find this concept both extremely interesting and extremely terrifying.
Pros of Parallel Universe theory:
- Means that there is a universe where me and all my friends win the lottery and go on to live happy, happy lives
- Means that there is a universe where the President of The United States of America is, in fact, my cat.
- Means that there is a universe where humanity never existed and our Earth is going to live for much, much longer without us.
Cons of Parallel Universe theory:
- Means that there is a universe where everyone on the planet has an aneurysm at the same time and dies
- Means that there is a universe where World War 2 is still going on.
- Means that there is a universe where World War 3 has begun.
And my main fear:
- Means that for every good decision I’ve made as a person, there is a universe where a bad choice was made.
This thought very recently came to me when I was doing some dishes and between dancing and replacing cutlery, I barely grazed myself in the neck with a sharp knife.
There’s a universe where I stabbed myself through the jugular, collapsed and quickly bled out and passed away; and then my family came home to the sight of me, lying in a pool of my own blood, long since passed away.
That thought alone is what keeps me awake at night.
